Buffett and Munger Are Licking Their Chops

The growing anxiety and sluggishness of investors is easily seen with the major market averages recently sliding back from high levels a month ago. Rather than twisting yourself into a pretzel, becoming paralyzed and unable to do anything meaningful with your portfolio I believe it is often wise to take a fresh look at everything and put yourself in the mindset of great long term investors like Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger of Berkshire Hathaway and ask yourself what would they be thinking and doing in this situation. I think the answer is pretty straightforward that they would be licking their chops, looking and investing in very good businesses at discount prices and not spending too much time debating difficult questions about trade wars and global uncertainty.

We all know the difficulty of trying to predict what will happen with the current trade war standoff between China and the U.S. as commentary drags on without any signs of optimism. Rather than trying to decipher this quagmire of political chess I believe it is far better to put yourself in the shoes of Warren Buffett and look at the low interest rate environment with no signs of recession and decide that the uncertainty is creating great buying opportunities across many sectors to pick up or add to many of our favorite stocks. Recent opportunities in some of our favorite stocks that just reported strong quarterly numbers include Target, Home Depot, Cisco Systems, Advanced Micro Devices, NVIDIA, Merck, and Abbott Labs.

I believe opportunities will be created over the summer in many of our favorite long term themes that include internet security, 5G, artificial intelligence, gaming, healthcare technology, and cloud software companies. If the markets continue to slide back due to global uncertainties I will be pleased to buy our favorite names and a few new companies if the price is right.

By the way, I took the title of this commentary from an article in Seeking Alpha. I always enjoy a good commentary that compliments my thinking and provides me an opportunity to express my thoughts in a fashion that makes sense. It is nice to see that other long term investors and advisors have a similar view toward stocks and the markets as I do. As you remember, in December I was wondering if I was the only long term investor on the planet. Today, we are not in that place and I believe it is time to put on our buying hats again.

Have a great week,

Roger N. Steed
