Live Your Truth
I witnessed something extraordinary last Saturday that I would like to share. A memorial for one of my clients who died unexpectedly brought together friends and family from many different communities and circles of life to celebrate a person who touched many people through her life journey. A life that crossed a wide group of friends and loved ones including Native American and LGBTQ+ communities, PFLAG, Affirmations, Boy Scouts of America, and the Detroit Area Steelheaders. I have never attended an event like this where 20 or more people across all these communities shared their stories and expressed emotion how Rachael touched their lives and made their lives better.
Person after person told truly remarkable stories about how Rachael made an impact in their lives with her teaching, counseling, listening, and tough love friendship. The common thread that flowed through many stories was Rachael’s conviction to “Live Your Truth”, live the life you feel in your heart is right for you. Many people who spoke and I am sure many in attendance felt that Rachael literally saved their lives. Saved their lives. Wow! Rachael did not have doctor in front of her name just a kind heart and a friendly persistence to help friends through really tough life challenges. And, what an impact she had.
More stories from childhood friends, hunting and fishing buddies as well as scouting adventures and Native American spiritual guidance and teaching provided a glimpse to a wide spectrum of folks that were touched by Rachael’s friendship. Even the girls at Kroger where Rachael did her grocery shopping were fast friends and shared their appreciation for her jokes and friendship.
One story I will always remember was provided by a close friend who told Rachael at some point that he was lost and didn’t know which path to take. The path to the right or the path to the left. Rachael in her own way said something to the effect “You see this machete in my hand. We are going to use it to cut your own path that you believe that is right for you.” And away they went down this new path of love and friendship. That’s pretty powerful stuff in my book.
Upon reflection this weekend, I can’t make any sense out of those we lose too early in life and those that stick around to cause us pain and trouble. If anyone has figured that out please pass it back. I am sure we all would like to know the answer. Finally, I am stealing a tagline from a commercial I heard for Key West, Florida that I am sure Bernadette, Marie, Stephen, and Mary Beth share with me. Racheal was ‘Perfect but not normal’.
